The Best Lego Designs

Although they are toys, Legos inspire amazing creations. LEGO artists make use of small plastic bricks to build everything from robots and architecture. Even the company’s engineers design new components that allow builders to create more intricate models. Erik Varszegi, a Master Builder working for the Lego Group in Billund, Denmark, designed one such new element this year: the curve of the slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted forms while still staying within the strict color palette of the company. The slopes can also be used to create more dynamic shapes like the curving staircase.

Some Lego sets are the result of professional designers’ work, while others are the result of the popular Lego Ideas program. The Ideas line allows anyone to design a set and it’s also possible to produce. It gives fame and 1% of sales for anyone who convinces 10,000 of their peers that their design is worthy to be created. It’s no surprise that more elaborate and awe-inspiring sets are the ones that garner the most popularity — especially when they feature iconic scenes or characters from TV shows, movies, or real life.

Two space icons are among the top Lego models of the space shuttle Discovery and Hubble Telescope. NASA shuttle Discovery and the Hubble Telescope model. Each model comes with display plaques and a tiny Lego replica of the scientist who designed the telescope. Other impressive models include a framed Rainbow, a Steampunk Dragon, and a model of the Westminster Palace.
